The Power of a Gratitude Practice for Mental Health

Naje Love

When life feels heavy and the world seems overwhelming, one of the most powerful tools you can carry with you is gratitude. In moments of stress, it’s easy to forget this simple yet transformative practice, but learning to incorporate it during difficult times can truly shift your emotional landscape. As women, we often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, and it can feel like our emotional and mental health are the first things to be overlooked. But I’ve learned, through personal experience, that even in the most trying of circumstances, taking a moment to be thankful can create a ripple effect that positively impacts our overall well-being.

A couple of years ago, I experienced a life-changing moment that left me questioning my decision and my worth. I had relocated to a new city, hoping for a fresh start and new opportunities – I sought this opportunity understanding that I needed to spread my wings and find myself. But what I didn’t anticipate was the wave of challenges that would come with it. The feeling of displacement was all-consuming. It wasn’t just the unfamiliar streets, the strange skyline, or the fact that I didn’t know anyone—it was the overwhelming sense of loneliness and fear that gripped me. I feared I had made the wrong decision, and every time I looked around, I felt out of place. I was alone in a sea of strangers, navigating a new city without the comforting familiarity of home.

For three months, I didn’t have a job, and the insecurity weighed heavily on me. The pressure to make ends meet was relentless, and I had very little money to spare—just enough for rent and food. The only option I had for income was to take a part-time holiday job at a well-known electronics and appliance store, a far cry from my corporate aspirations. Working there for eight months was humbling. It wasn’t the career I’d envisioned, but it was a way to survive. The low pay and long hours left me exhausted, but even then, I knew deep down that something had to change.

The loneliness I felt was suffocating at times. I met a few people online, but making genuine connections felt elusive. Yet, amid this loneliness and uncertainty, I found myself at a crossroads. I knew that if I continued to focus on what I didn’t have, the situation would never improve. It was then that I stumbled upon the power of gratitude.

At first, the concept felt foreign to me. How could I be grateful when everything seemed to be falling apart? But I decided to give it a try. One evening, after yet another challenging day, I sat down with my journal and forced myself to write. I began with the obvious: I was grateful for my health, for having a roof over my head, for my family’s support even though they were miles away. But as I continued to write, I realized something profound. I wasn’t just writing a list—I was shifting my mindset. As hard as it was, I began to see the value in the struggle. Gratitude became the lens through which I could view my challenges—not as setbacks but as stepping stones toward personal growth.

The first few days were tough. It was hard to feel thankful when I was stuck in a job that wasn’t aligned with my dreams, and when I was desperately waiting for something—anything—to shift. But as I consistently practiced gratitude, I started to see the small victories. I was grateful for the opportunity to work, to meet people, and to learn new skills—even in a job that wasn’t my ideal. I was thankful for the resilience that each day taught me, for the small moments of connection with strangers, and for the quiet strength I found in myself.

Slowly, I began to view my new life in this unfamiliar city through a different lens. My environment didn’t seem so intimidating anymore. The isolation I felt became a reminder that change was hard but necessary. I started to appreciate the new experiences, the people I was meeting, and the opportunities that were beginning to surface. Gradually, I found joy in the transformation I was undergoing. Every step forward, no matter how small, felt like progress.

Looking back, I realize that the shift wasn’t immediate—it was a process. But each day of gratitude brought me closer to healing. I went from feeling helpless to feeling empowered, from being stuck in fear to embracing the journey. Gratitude gave me the space to grow, to welcome new challenges, and to see the beauty in what was happening around me.

Gratitude as a Practice

This practice of gratitude was not just about recognizing the good in my life—it was about creating a new perspective. I started to focus on what was working rather than what wasn’t. And that shift in mindset gave me the courage to take actionultimately landing a corporate job that aligned with my goals and vision.

If you’re facing your own set of challenges—whether it’s a big move, a career setback, or simply feeling disconnected from your surroundings—I encourage you to embrace gratitude. It may not immediately erase the difficulty, but it will shift your perspective, lighten the burden, and allow you to see the potential for growth. Gratitude isn’t about ignoring the hard stuff, but about finding the beauty and lessons even in the most challenging of circumstances.

How a Gratitude Practice Can Improve Mental Health

When we practice gratitude, we train our brains to focus on the positive rather than the negative. This doesn’t mean ignoring the hard stuff – it means recognizing that even in hardship, there’s something to be thankful for. And this shift can drastically improve your emotional health.

A few of the mental health benefits of gratitude are as follows:

  • Stress Reduction: Studies show that regular gratitude practice can lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, which means you’ll be better able to handle pressure.

  • Positive Mindset: Focusing on the good in your life promotes a positive outlook that can help you face challenges with resilience.

  • Increased Emotional Health: Gratitude helps improve your self-esteem and overall emotional health by shifting your thoughts from lack to abundance.

The Science Behind Gratitude and Mental Health

Several studies highlight how gratitude positively affects mental and emotional well-being. For example, the article, The Power of Gratitude in Improving Mental Health, from NCPR News delves into studies that show practicing gratitude not only improves mental health but also enhances physical health by lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of depression.

Oprah Winfrey, in her article, Gratitude: The Antidote to a Fear-Driven Life, shares how gratitude helped her shift from fear and worry to a more empowered, appreciative way of living. This shift wasn’t just beneficial for Oprah's emotional well-being; it became the foundation of her resilience in the face of challenges.

Tony Robbins, in his article, What Are the Benefits of Gratitude?, speaks about how incorporating gratitude into your daily routine can enhance your personal growth, strengthen your relationships, and lead to a more fulfilling life.

How You Can Start Your Own Gratitude Practice Today

Making gratitude a habit doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how you can start today:

  1. Set aside time each day: Dedicate a few minutes every morning or evening to reflect on what you’re grateful for.

  1. Use a gratitude journal: Write down at least three things you’re thankful for. It could be anything – from a kind gesture from a friend to a beautiful sunset.

  1. Focus on the small wins: It’s easy to overlook the small things, but often they’re the most powerful. Celebrating small victories can improve your mental health by helping you acknowledge progress.

  1. Share your gratitude: Sometimes, sharing your gratitude with others – whether it’s through a simple thank you or writing a heartfelt note – can amplify the positive effects.

By incorporating a gratitude practice into your daily routine, you’ll not only enhance your mental well-being but also cultivate a positive outlook that can carry you through even the toughest times. No matter where you’re starting from, taking those first steps toward gratitude can shift your entire perspective, just as it did for me.

Remember, healing and growth take time. And just like my story, yours may not be an immediate transformation, but consistency will lead to stress relief and a life filled with more peace and happiness.
