Fostering Greater Awareness, Presence, and Power

Have you ever felt like you were simply moving through life on autopilot? Waking up, going through the motions, and ending the day feeling unfulfilled? It happens to all of us. But what if there was a way to reconnect—to truly see yourself, to be present in your life, and to step into your power with confidence?
For many, the wake-up call comes in the form of a crisis—a lost job, a failed relationship, or an overwhelming sense of emptiness. For Toni, a high-achieving executive, it was burnout. She spent years climbing the corporate ladder, sacrificing sleep, relationships, and her own well-being, thinking success would bring her happiness. But the more she achieved, the more disconnected she felt. One day, she found herself sitting in her car after a long day, unable to move, tears streaming down her face. She realized she had lost herself in the pursuit of external validation. This moment of stillness became her turning point. She knew she needed to reclaim her presence, awareness, and power—not just for her career, but for her life.
Toni’s story isn’t unique. Many of us spend years chasing something outside of ourselves, only to realize that the answers we seek lie within. Let’s explore the steps that helped her—and can help you—step into greater Mindfulness, Awareness, Presence, and Power.
Step One: Cultivating Mindful Awareness
The first step to reclaiming your power is recognizing the subconscious patterns running your life. Mindfulness Practice isn’t just about meditation—it’s about training yourself to become aware of your thoughts, emotions, and reactions in real time.
One of the most impactful insights I came across was from Simon Sinek, who spoke about silencing the inner critic in his article One Effective Way to Silence Your Inner Critic. He explained how self-compassion is key to shifting negative self-talk. This resonated deeply with Toni—she had spent years being her own worst enemy, without realizing that awareness and kindness toward herself could be transformative.
Practical Exercise:
-
Set aside 5 minutes daily to observe your thoughts without judgment.
-
When negative thoughts arise, ask yourself, “Would I speak to a friend this way?”
-
Replace self-criticism with curiosity: “What can I learn from this moment?”
Step Two: Expanding Presence
Presence is about showing up fully in each moment, rather than living in the past or the future. This was something I learned while listening to Lewis Howes’ podcast episode with IN-Q titled Use Your Voice to Change the World. IN-Q emphasized that our true power lies in authenticity—when we fully embrace where we are and speak our truth, we create meaningful impact.
For Toni, presence meant setting boundaries, saying “no” to things that drained her energy, and carving out space for real connection. She learned to engage fully in conversations, listen with intention, and express herself without fear of judgment. The result? Deeper connections, better decision-making, and a newfound sense of empowerment.
Practical Exercise:
-
Before entering any interaction, take three deep breaths to ground yourself.
-
Practice active listening—focus fully on the speaker instead of formulating your response.
-
Speak with intention, using words that reflect your truth.
Stepping into your power doesn’t mean striving for perfection—it means owning your journey with grace. Toni realized that real power came not from doing more but from being more present and kind to herself. She found tremendous inspiration in Patrice Washington’s article The Power of Self-Compassion, where she explored how self-kindness is the foundation of personal and professional success.
When Toni began treating herself with the same grace she extended to others, everything shifted. She no longer felt like she was constantly chasing approval. Instead, she became her own source of validation.
Practical Exercise:
-
Each morning, write down one thing you love about yourself.
-
When you make a mistake, remind yourself: “I am learning and growing.”
-
Celebrate small victories—progress is powerful.
